week #2... 7 ways

hey everyone, I hope you enjoyed last weeks 7 ways... here we go with week #2

write it down, log it, keep track... however you do it keep track of what & the amounts you're eating each day.  this is one of the key things they teach you at weight watchers & even though i'm not always the best at it, if i feel like i'm getting off track, this always brings me back around.  it will really suprise you when you start doing this how much you may be fooling yourself.  when i first started i realized i was snacking, munching, whatever all the time. big eye opener!  anyway, there are several ways you could go about it, get yourself a pretty little notebook you can keep in your purse, log it on your phone {there are lots of great apps out there for any kind of smart phone that will make this easy!}, use your computer if you're in front of it the whole day, seriously, use the awesome technology that's out there. just google diet log & you'll be overwhelmed with the number of websites out there that are just for this purpose.

i mentioned last week to try to find substitutions or solutions for foods you love... well I found an awesome one for the pumpkin spice lattes from starbucks!

photo & recipe via loveveggiesandyoga.com

Pumpkin Spice Latte (Vegan, Gluten Free)

1. Make coffee (a pot, a cup, in whatever fashion and however you prefer making your coffee.   The stronger the better)

2. Make Pumpkin Milk

1 c milk (I used almond milk but use any kind you want from half and half to rice milk)

1/4 heaping cup pumpkin puree (more if you really love pumpkin)

2 tsp pumpkin pie spice blend, or to taste

1 tsp cinnamon, or to taste

1 tsp vanilla extract

sweetener of choice, to taste (I suggest 2 tbsp agave or 2 tbsp brown sugar or a pinch of stevia to taste; or try honey, maple syrup, etc. to taste)

Optional: pinch of ground nutmeg, ginger, garam masala, cardamom, or other warming spices to taste

Directions: Combine all ingredients in a small bowl and whisk well by hand or blend all ingredients using a Vita or blender

Optional: Warm the finished pumpkin milk mixture in the microwave or on the stovetop (I do a quick nuke of about 1 minute)

3. Pour 1 c of brewed coffee into a mug and pour half the pumpkin milk mixture over the top of the coffee and enjoy.  (Optional: Finish by garnishing with real whipped cream/whipped topping such as CoolWhip or TruWhip; and a sprinkle of pumpkin pie spice/cinnamon on top)

The other half of the pumpkin milk mixture is for the refill you know you will want.  If you truly don’t want a refill, refrigerate it for up to a few days and use for your next latte, in a smoothie, or drink it as is.  As long as you’re dirtying dishes, I always make a little extra for refills or for later.

Notes:

The spices will not “blend” or entirely dissolve.  This is to be expected and normal.  If this bothers you, this may not the recipe for you and you may want to experiment with other recipes or techniques.

seriously true on every one of these. great tips to remember... especially number one. i really get so annoyed by the people who try the quick fixes like shake diets & such.  how can you live like that for the rest of your life? you can't... that's it. don't take the easy way, work hard & you'll be rewarded.

make the right choices for not only you, but for your family. if you don't feel good about eating it, you shouldn't feel good about your kids eating it either. i admit, there are still some treats i let my kids have, but i try to make it a special thing, not an every day thing. plus it's expensive! healthy food may seem expensive, but look at how much you're getting for your money!  & just think how far ahead of the game they'll be later in life by knowing healthy eating habits. this is so important.

try your best to plan ahead. do you know you'll be going out to eat, going to a party, at work, or just will be away from home for longer than usual? make sure you're prepared with a healthy snack in your purse or desk! a snack bar, apple or banana, almonds, dried fruit, crackers... they all travel well & can really be a life saver! we recently went on a day trip with the kids & weren't around too many great places to eat. i had packed lots of healthy snacks, so i basically ate all my meals from things i had in the car.  it could have been a big hiccup in my week, but i didn't overeat, or use too many of my points on my ww daily allowance, so i was happy :)  right now it's just like an automatic response to have something in my purse when i leave the house, you just never know!

enjoy what your eating, or it's just not worth it!  i figured this out as well while going through ww... if it didn't taste good & i wasn't enjoying it, i just stopped eating & chose something else.  seriously, why waste your calories? luckily, i work at home, so it's generally just something small i whip up at home, so i can save it for leftovers for someone else to eat or change it up so it does fit the bill.  think about what you're putting into your mouth, though. don't just shovel it in, making it the requirement you need to eat for that meal, but really think about if tastes good, enjoy it.  it's not just food, it's fuel that your body needs.

i found this list on pinterest, but if you go to the source link on dr. oz's website, you can get a printable version.  this a great guide to take along with you & to make sure you have a good, healthy stocked pantry, freezer & fridge to create lots of great recipes for you & your family.

well, that's it for this week...have a great weekend everyone!

I made several leaps of faith... I decided to leave a good design job with great people I loved working with, but really wasn't happy with where I was going.  I started on a whim with a friend & my sister at Weight Watchers about the same time.  I started my own business, first on Etsy, then putting myself out there in the digital scrapbook design at Design House Digital.  All at the same time as becoming once again a full time stay at home mom to {at that time} an active 3 yr old & her brothers 7 & 11.  I really had no idea how I was going to do it all, but it all seemed right somehow in my heart.

As far as the work part, there were many months of working & putting the time in with not much return, lots of second guessing my decisions.  But I kept on keeping on & things started gaining momentum.  The love I have for all my new digital scrapbooking friends {& ever supportive paper scrappers} who cheered me on along the way is overwhelming.  Putting myself out there has definitely paid off & I'm now super busy designing some awesome stuff both digitally & paper, that I'm so proud of & excited about.

In the weight loss part, as many of you know, the weight came off, I started & have come to love running, not to mention I have the support of 2 of my sisters & my mom joining me every week at Weight Watchers meetings.  I would have NEVER guessed a year ago I'd be in this body right now & doing the things I'm doing.  I'm SO happy I started all this a year ago... & this quote is so very true...

As far as the stay-at-home part... I've done it with the both our boys & now with our daughter.  It can be SO hard & challenging, sometimes I have to ask for help to get it all done.  I have to remind myself to stop working... it's not always the most important thing... pay attention, giggle, play, don't take everything so seriously.  Everything is fleeting... get over the bad & not so fun parts & enjoy the wonderful moments when your kids share their lives with you, give hugs & kisses, say those sweet & funny things you want to remember forever.

Yes, I'd have to say, a year ago, none of this seemed possible, but I started... worked through it, dreamed about it, prayed about it, & just really, really, hoped things would work out.  I'm still hoping & dreaming... because who knows, next June, where I'll be.  But I'm hoping I'll still be running, designing stuff I love & keeping great memories along the way.  Thank you to all my friends & family that have believed in me.  I love you all :)

great accomplishments with family...

it's taken me a while to post this, but last Saturday my mom, 2 sisters Carol & Kim & myself all joined up with our Weight Watchers group to complete a 5k.  It was cold {can we say mid-40s?}, rainy & windy... yeh, not the best conditions for a 5k, but we persevered & got our butts out there anyway!  That, was accomplishment #1!  Carol & I have been going to WW since last June & have lost lots of poundage & have been working out for alot longer... my Mom has been going since the end of the year & has made HUGE strides & Kim has been going with us for a few months now & she has also done great!  I'm so proud of my mom, who has had knee replacement & has pushed her way through the training for the 5k.  She was mentioning just Saturday how she only had to stop once to stretch a little, compared to 2-3 times just a month before when we took a long walk.  It's amazing what losing weight & moving your body can do for you!  I'm also really proud of my sister Kim, who like us all, has struggled with weight her whole life & has been so awesome through starting on the program & training for the 5k... I'm sure she {as all of us have} NEVER thought she could walk 3.1 miles & not die!  I've loved watching both of them get excited, not just about the weight loss, but actually excited to see how much farther they could walk each day.  I love this picture of Kim & mom coming to the finish!  I swear I was so proud to see them coming & the looks on their faces... even smiling at the end!  LOVE YOU guys SO MUCH!  I'm so happy we can accomplish these things together!

It's so amazing to see what we can accomplish when we just try.  Seriously... you really don't know what you are capable of until you try!  I can't wait to see what's next for us!  love you all <3

Lifetime...

{layout by me} Journaling reads: 2.22.11 "I've made it... today I completed my final 6 weeks of maintenance & gained my lifetime membership with Weight Watchers.  I first started the program online in April 2008.  I spent from then until May 2010 struggling with my weight, losing 19 pounds. Then a friend asked me to go to meetings with her... & I did.  I'm so thankful I did... because I KNOW I wouldn't be here today.  I've lost 30 extra pounds since joining the meetings in June 2010 for a total of 49 pounds lost.  This is not the end for sure.  It's taken me a lifetime to get to where I am & it's going to take a lifetime to stay where I am for sure... but now I know it's possible.  I love the program.  I love how I'm feeling.  I love how I'm an even more positive role model for my kids, seeing how working hard & sticking with something is so worth it."

Thanks everyone for their positive comments, compliments & support towards me... you're so wonderful to me :)

accomplishing goals...

last night I accomplished one of the goals on my list for 2011... keep up with my weight loss journey. It's taken me a little over 7 months to lose 30 pounds & reach my goal weight.  When I went to my weigh in last night I thought I *may* have gotten there, but last week seemed to be a little more of a struggle for me.  I felt like I wanted to snack all.the.time!  Ugh, I've realized though, over the course of these months, that I have days or weeks like that & I just have to keep talking myself through it & move on from it.  Sometimes I do go overboard, but I've definitely found that on those days even if I don't feel bad mentally about what I've eaten, my body certainly does.  I end up feeling horrible because my body has become accustomed to this new life I've created for it & it loves to tell me it doesn't want to go back! I went this morning to the WW website & entered my weight from last night... boom! 6 more points to my daily allowance. That's great... a little scary, because I was just getting nice & settled into my routine.  But even better?  Although I've been going to meetings for 7 months, I've been using the online tools for about 3 years now.  It keeps track of everything since you've started with the program... & the final number for me? 49. 49 pounds lost. holy crap!  sorry... just had to say it.

so, I'm excited to say, just 12 days into the new year... I can cross one thing off my list. Although I'm not *done* by any means, this journey is just starting really & something I'm constantly aware of as I move into my maintanance phase wish me luck finding my happy medium over the next 6 weeks.  I'll be happy to inform you when I receive my lifetime status as a WW member!  oh & another thing... although I feel like I'm a fairly motivated person & try to push myself, I am so glad to have had my sister Carol & my mom Mary {who are both going strong & lookin' great} here beside me!  If I didn't have them to go to meetings with I know I probably wouldn't be at this place today :)  Love you both :) Also thanks to all of YOU with your encouraging words & listening to my ramblings on the subject of weight loss! xoxo

...just one more thing... I know I might sound like a paid advertisement, but, really if you're thinking about WW, I have only great things to say.  This really works.  It's not a diet, you are changing your life, your lifestyle, to be one that is so much better for you & your family. enough said.

***I'll be back later for some sneak peeks of my new releases for tomorrow***
